罗马帝国的开国皇帝奥古斯都（Augustus），原名屋大维（Octavius）。他是恺撒大帝的甥孙及义子。在凯撒被刺死后，成为凯撒的继承人，他依靠高超的政治手腕，逐步掌握了罗马的军政大权，最终成为罗马帝国真正的开国皇帝。公元前27年，罗马元老院因为其卓越功勋而授予他Augustus（拉丁文意为“神圣的、威严的”）的称号，后世即用此称之。为了和凯撒齐名，他也想用自己的名字来命名一个月份。他的生日在9月，但他却选择了8月，因为8月在其政治与军事生涯中是个吉利的月份，罗马元老院也是在8月授予他Augustus（奥古斯都）这个尊号的。于是，他决定用这个尊号来命名8月。原来8月比7月少一天，为了和凯撒平起平坐，他又决定从2月中抽出一天加在8月上。从此，2月便少了一天。于是从公元前8年起，8月改名为Augustus。Augustus一词进入英语后演变为August。这就是August（八月）的由来。所以，英语中的8月（August）实际上就是由这位罗马皇帝的拉丁语尊号演变而来。
